PostSubject: Prevent A Mite   Mon Jan 09, 2012 10:31 pm

Does anyone know where I can get some Prevent A Mite and other stuff to treat mites on the peninsula? I found some mites on my bumblebee this evening. I was wondering. Where do the mites come from? I have had these snakes since September without any mites. I don't take them out for walks or anything so I was wondering where they can possibly come from?

PAM: I would order online. It should only take a few days but you will spend half as much than at the pet store. The only place I have seen it is Animal Jungle, haven't really looked elsewhere, but I think it's $30ish. I bought two cans online last year for $30 shipped.

I think mites may have infected your snake three ways. They could have been laying dormant since you got them. Some sellers will spray down infected snakes before they sell them and the buyer won't see them for 30 days. Lets say in October only a couple hatched and they went unnoticed for another 30-60 days, which is easy, and then repopulated Planet Snake. Pretty unlikely but possible.

The second way is acquiring used tanks, enclosures, decor, subsrate etc etc. If any of this came from another keeper, it's considered used. If any of this came from a pet store, I would also consider used in regards to mites.

The third was would be mingling with other snakes or collections and taking on a stowaway. Probably pretty slim of happening, but possible.

There are probably more ways you could have got them but these are the three ways I always stay aware of in order to prevent transmission.

I have not done this, but here are some instructions for using Nix.

I, personally, wouldn't use anything but PAM and would go to Animal Jungle if I had to today. Opinions would vary, but I think that would be the safest, quickest solution. I've seen PAM kill and prevent the return of mites in one treatment (although you should definitely do two to be safe).

I got the PAM and I am treating as we speak. I spray the cage and then I let it sit in front of a fan for 30 minutes. I am pretty sure that it is completely dry. Also, I got some of those Advantix flea and tick collars but I am having a hard time keeping them around the snakes neck.

I know! I tried tape, then glue, then staples! None of them worked! I think I am going to try and get my money back.

I would definitely try to get my money back if all those didn't work. That snake is defective! Very Happy

So I am finally done! I cleaned all the snakes and they are back in their homes all nice and cozy. Although they seemed a little bit out of sorts after their baths. So I PAM'd all the cages and I gotta say, I did not know cooking spray was such a versatile product. It's great! I sprayed down the cages and then fried an egg with the stuff! Is there anything we as humans can't come up with? The next thing you know, they will be selling bread already sliced and cheese that is individually wrapped! Good times people, good times!

One other thing I suggest, is changing their water bowls, if returned to the enclosure, excessively. They tend to roll around in that stuff and if they are still itchy, they may try to soak and then drink the water. It might not even make a difference but worth trying just in case.

Thanks Nick. I thought about that after I put the bowls back. Fortunately, none of my snakes decided to soak themselves. I guess the bath was enough soaking for one day. I kept on checking on them to see but no one has taken a dip.

No problem.

One thing I just remembered, where do you get your feeder rodents from? I have read, and it makes sense, that pet shops (who have a higher probability of carrying mites) can feed a snake a rodent and if it doesn't take, return it to the feeder bin. While snake mites are not interested in inhabiting a rat, they aren't interested in my sleeve either and I have found trespassers before from leaving "others'" houses. Just something that crossed my mind.

I've used a Jungle Mite Spray with success. I bought a baby ball python at a show a while back and a few months later found mites on it. They just escaped my notice. x.x Now I know better.

I get my rodents from a rodent breeder (hampton mousery). Hopefully I will be getting them from my own small colony soon. Do they make rodent viagra? I think I might need some. They really need to get busy. The rats I mean.

People say breeding your own is taxing, but I think it brings such great rewards. There's enough rat breeders around that you can probably pick up all kind of genes and combo's. I'm working on a rex blue masked dumbo ... if that's possible LOL It'll take a lot longer before I have a snake with that many genes
