Too bad she beat it to death. It would have been cool to see how it used the hand.

Looks as if the snake swallowed a lizard and while killing the snake, the arm of the lizard was exposed.

so what dictates body shapes are homeobox genes. mutations in these genes are a reason for the diversity in body patterns we see in nature. a mutation in a snake's homeobox or a series of homeobox genes may have reverted this snake to develop an arm. This shows implications of an evolutionary past shared with animals with legs and the fact that snakes are after all characterized as tetrapods. However, I think until they do an autopsy, which hopefully will include genetic work, we won't know.

also, this could just be a weird tumor that looks like an arm...we can't let confirmation bias and anthropogenic presuppositions allow us to come to conclusions.

True, but the woman who beat it to death said she heard it crawling up the wall, so it could have been a useful appendage.

Or she could just be superstitious...or she could be making assumptions after the fact. One sees hand--one imagines that one might have heard a crawling, scratching sound. I would think the appendage is a useless mutation or genetic flaw...

I tried to post that two times yesterday and couldn't get it out right LOL. This anomoly reconnected the link that was broke to make snakes lose their legs, if I'm on the same page. The only thing that makes me doubt this, is the location. If spurs are what's left of their legs, I would have suspected it to be lower.

It did look pretty odd...did this happen in 2009?
Also, maybe I am wrong, but I thought there have been snakes found that have internal anatomic structures where their appendages should have been if they had had them. I guess if I read Nick and Larry's postsfrom earlier, maybe that's what I am trying to say too... Smile

Yeah me too, apparently the chinese lady found it in 2009, and I looked up where it was sent to, to see if they had said anything about the autopsy and stuff but nothing came up for me except a bunch of stuff saying it was a hoax, so I dunno?

You are all wrong! This was just a snake that had a burning desire to high five someone! Unfortunately he picked the wrong region of the world for that high five. An elderly chinese women doing a high five is as rare as a snake with an arm. Poor guy. Tonight, I am going home and I am going to tip my 40 to my homey. Then I am going to walk around the neighborhood high fiving everyone I see in memorium of our departed friend who never got to high five anybody. A moment of silence please...

It is highly likely that this was a hoax, however, it does underscore the evolutionary past of these animals.
