PostSubject: Anyone Know Of A Good Macro Lense?   Tue Aug 25, 2015 5:01 pm

I'm searching for a new Macro lens for my canon DSLR. I want to do some close up photography of small bugs and stuff. The cheaper the better, so if I can pick one up for around $100 that would be great. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Judging by the cost of my husband's photography equipment, "cheap" and "camera equipment" are mutually exclusive, especially for lenses.

I agree completely, But you can pick up some second hand lenses for pretty cheap. I've been watching CL for awhile and have found some good deals but don't know which lens to pick

(I am a photographer)

A true proper dedicated macro lens is NOT cheap, even second-hand. Dedicated macro lenses are some of the most exacting and demanding lenses made today, thus, difficult to make, and command high prices.

Give you are one of *them* (a filthy stinking Canon user) you have limited options based on the mount, either EF or EF-S, depending on which Canon dSLR you have, you cannot use older FD mount lenses even with a converter.

Now having said all of that, I do Infrared photography with a Canon (so I'm one of them as well) but my main weapon is a Nikon, and my 60mm f/2.8 Sigma Macro set me back 350$, used.

Give me some more info about the model of your Canon, and what level of skill you have, and I'll see if I can't suggest you a good lens, but you're going to need to up your budget...

Thanks for the advice. I own a canon 600D. I my budged allowed I would have chosen a much nicer camera, but considering I'm only 16 I'm not exactly fishing out money. Also, the reason I chose canon was because the Nikon on the same class and price did not come with an auto focus motor. Although I RARELY shoot in auto focus It does help sometime. As far as my skill, I only shoot in manual mode and I photograph just about once a day. I also do star trails and long exposure when I'm not photographing reptiles.

Nothing wrong with the Canon, it can take both EF and EF-S lenses, so that opens up some options.
A true, dedicated Macro lens will be a fixed focal length (eg 50mm, 90mm, 100mm) anything that is variable focus "macro", has a close up feature, but it's not a true Macro lens.

I looked around eBay a bit and the only option you have is a Tamron 50mm f/2.8 Macro. Just out of your price range, but a heck of a lens. I have the 60mm version and love it, plus, it can double as a standard portrait lens.

The other option, and I've used this before with good results, is the Tamron/Sigma 70-300mm Macro:

Should find some good examples in your price range. Again, not a true Macro, but it can get pretty close.

Here are some examples of my Macro work: http://plaguedbethyangel.blogspot.nl/search/label/macro
