PostSubject: Biology Paper   Tue Oct 15, 2013 6:39 pm

Hello all!

I am currently taking Biology 101 this semester. We have a paper to write and my professor is really encouraging me to write my paper about something related to reptiles, as she knows it is an interest of mine. I had suggested to her an interesting topic would be genetic disease in ball pythons but one of the requirements of the paper is to cite scientific research. I'm not sure if there has been any scientific research on this subject, other than hobbyist's observations.

Can you think of a subject that relates to reptiles (other than the invasive species problem in the Everglades as I have already written my English paper about that subject and honestly cannot bare to read/write another paragraph about it) that has been studied scientifically? It has to relate to something we study in class. (So far we've gone over cells, cell respiration, photosynthesis, and we are about to start genetics I think. Genetics would probably be the better option.)

Any help would be appreciated. The paper is due by the end of November so I have a little time, but I want to get a jump start on it.

How about a paper on the genetics of ball python morphs, the genetic manipulation of dominant, co-dominant, and recessive traits in captive-bred populations, the prevalence of polymorphism in wild populations, including info on how being polygynandrous might contribute to their genetic diversity.
If you know of a veterinarian who treats reptiles, call them and ask if they have one of those huge textbooks on reptiles. Those books usually cite lots of references/studies on both reptile genetics and reptile pathology. Hope these suggestions help. Best of luck!

Not that anyone cares, but figured I'd give an update on this.

I did my paper on IBD (just informational and I wrote a bit about the importance of quarantine) and I got a 99 A on my paper! Woohoo!

Nice, congrats!  Was your professor aware of IBD before the paper?

Awesome I did a couple reptile based papers in college for various subjects. I always got amazing grades on them.
