PostSubject: Help ID'ing a spider I found in my office   Wed Jun 26, 2013 10:31 pm

I've never seen anything like this before, it was about the size of a quarter (body) with long legs, walking down my office hallway. Tan in colour, very sticky legs (I slipped it up with a notepad and I couldn't shake it off) not bald like a brown recluse, but not overly fuzzy either.

But the single most amazing part of the spider, and I'm sure this will ID it, is a paid of folded back front jaws/palps, they looked like what you would find on a praying mantis. He carried them in front of him, folded together side by side so the top knuckle was higher than his abdomen. They folded back under themselves and were slender, with jagged 'teeth' on the ends

They reminded me of a Mantis Shrimp piercers

But not as exaggerated as the MS.

Anyway, I moved him to a plant but I was really curious as to what he might be...

Sounds as if it may be a exotic mantis. Perhaps hitched a ride on a plant delivery.

It had 8 legs. Definitely a spider of some kind

I thought about a whip spider, but the arms weren't horizontal like a whip's are, and the "teeth" of the arms much less pronounced.

Yeah the one day I don't bring my camera...
Way too small to be a camel spider

A vinagaroon! Very Happy http://bugguide.net/images/raw/DRKQCRKQ3RIQCRXQTRQQTRQQFRSQ3R203R20ORSQQ0W0Q080CQLQJQ70CQ50Q0P0DRQQYRU0JRP0.jpg

Usually dark brown...dunno why you'd find one here.

A wind scorpion? America's camel spider? http://www.desertpacificexterminators.com/images/wind_scorpion.jpg

Really, you shouldn't see EITHER of those things here in VA just wandering around. Except I do know pet stores that do and have carried both.

Gah! If I could see it, I could almost certainly ID it. Any good at drawing in Microsoft Paint? Laughing

That vinagaroon looks awesome - and fierce! I have to admit if I saw one of those crawling next to me I'd sure as heck jump up and spill whatever I was drinking, lol.

Thx for links, but none of those.
I will do my best to draw it and see what I can post here, though my memory fades as I get older and I'm no longer certain what it exactly looks like. Definitely spider shaped (meaning it has two main body parts, plus 8 legs) it was the long jaws/teeth/front legs that it held up like a praying mantis that really struck me...

The british long jawed orb weaver is pretty close
http://www.eurospiders.com/Pachygnatha_clercki.htm

And for lack of a better idea (I'm kicking myself for not having a camera that day) I'll go with this as what I saw.
Though it isn't exact and of course I'm still wondering how it got here
