PostSubject: Whats everyone using as a substrate - ball pythons or ...    Wed Feb 13, 2013 1:55 am

Im just curious ive used a few, didnt care for aspen much, refuse to use newspaper (got tired of being able to read the articles off the lighter snakes :-p ), have seen and used various substrates each with pros and cons. Honestly, my favorite out of the bunch would probably be paper towels, almost perfect fit, absorbent, exc, but it has its downs too. I run a local business in va beach and get all kinds of office material catalogs, and one caught my eye from uline after just seeing it online on a reptile forum a few days earlier. Does anyone here have any opinions on bogus paper? I saw a posting about a year ago but figured id get some outside feedback on it. Was curious about its texture to the touch, actual absorbency, and if its thickness helps it from rolling up on those stubborn snakes that try to tear up anything in their cage o.0

I use bogus paper. It is thicker than newsprint and one sheet will do the job.

I'am using a cypress mulch, it helps with sheds, doesn't mold up like aspen when wet.

Ive tried the mulch, seems to do well with humitidty but trying to veer away from similar substrates, easier to clean, lowering monthly expenses, and did i mention cleaning? :-p

How about in comparison to thick paper towels? I imagine its more durable, Does it compare with absorbency?

i have lots of snakes that mess their tubs you can cut the paper so the sides are covered and when they mess the tub just pull the paper out if you leave standing water for a day the paper gets soggy but other than that its excellent i bought my roll about three months ago and still have paper left

Bogus paper is by far the easiest that I've used. I have it in rolls where the width is the same as the length of my tubs (30" - the top of the tubs are like 33", but the bottom is a flat 30"). It is on a cutter and I just pull off a sheet and tear it. Before cleaning, I tear off about 100 sheets, then pull a tub, put the snake in a clean one and swap it out. Cleaning each tub takes just a few minutes.

Also, to ease cleaning I use 16 oz. deli cups (bought by the case) set down into a PVC coupler.

Total cost of cleaning comes down to about five cents per week per tub.

While newspaper may be cheaper if you get it free, it takes a lot of time to fold it to the dimensions of the tubs. That is too much labor for me. With the number of animals I have, I go for the best in this order: 1 - proper care for the animal, 2 - labor saving, and 3 - cost.

If it takes too much time but saves cost and is good care for the animal, I look for something that will cut my time. It it is quick, easy and cheap but is not good for the animal it is a scrapped idea. I'd rather pay a little more to save my time as long as it does not compromise care.

Also, I use ARS racks in a controlled room, so bogus paper may not be the best option for everyone.

I currently use cypress for my ball, but I have used viva paper towels in the past, very absorbent, but not wallet friendly Sad

Don and DJ, where do you buy your bogus paper? And is it thicker than newspaper? I've never heard of this option before..

Or

http://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/S-12832/Specialty-Paper/50-lb-Bogus-Paper-Roll-30-x-720

If you ship to a business address, the uline can be cheaper. To a residential addr, quality is normally better. Check both with shipping cost. The rolls are heavy, so shipping is a significant expense.

I buy the 30" rolls because that size fits my tubs perfectly (41 qt, CB70). You will also need a cutter. But, that is a one time purchase.

Paper... everyone say's they have or had trouble with newspaper... In my experience with it I never did have any problems with the ink transferring to the snakes...
Now I use packing paper cheaper than newspaper fold it in half and put it in the tub...
Clean up is easy and breeze and doing it this way let's me have extra tubs stacked up and ready to go pull one out put another in. Used mulch and bedding IMO it can be pain when it come's time to clean

I use shredded aspen and newspaper for breeding but I'd love to get a roll of the uline paper and cutter. If anyone local wants to go in on an order to reduce shipping, let me know. That's the only thing that's been holding me back because I'm not sure if I'll stick with it.

I have some if you want to try, may order more for other size cages. I like the absorwncy of the paper towels but cost is higher and have a few who insist on messing up cage. This is definitely cheaper, a paper cutter would nice, will have to get one. Owning a business i get things from uline on occasion, and ordered a roll to try
