Next time you hear about all the native fauna pythons are destroying, this might help form a useful counterpoint:

From the Wall Street Journal

"That Cuddly Kitty Is Deadlier Than You Think" reads the headline on a New York Times "Science" story:

In a report that scaled up local surveys and pilot studies to national dimensions, scientists from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the Fish and Wildlife Service estimated that domestic cats in the United States--both the pet Fluffies that spend part of the day outdoors and the unnamed strays and ferals that never leave it--kill a median of 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion mammals a year, most of them native mammals like shrews, chipmunks and voles rather than introduced pests like the Norway rat.

The estimated kill rates are two to four times higher than mortality figures previously bandied about, and position the domestic cat as one of the single greatest human-linked threats to wildlife in the nation. More birds and mammals die at the mouths of cats, the report said, than from automobile strikes, pesticides and poisons, collisions with skyscrapers and windmills and other so-called anthropogenic causes

I have the original Nature study... on this if anyone wants it. It's in PDF form. Unless you subscribe to Nature you won't be able to see the whole study. I've been getting into some pretty heavy discussions about the veracity of this study with some folks on facebook. They are questioning the researcher's motives because one of Marra's students has a vendetta against cats and was convicted of animal cruelty for poisoning cats in her neighborhood. I don't buy that argument as a way to try to discredit this study.... the animal rights people (HSUS, PETA etc...) have been going at it with the ornithology community and it's always been a huge fight....cat people vs. bird people... comments?

I have two cats, but they never go outside. They are great when I get a loose rodent. Well, maybe my dog is a little better than they are. However, feral cats are a blight. They need to be removed because they are an invasive species and do far more damage (even if the study is half wrong) than loose pythons.

I wonder is a 1000 cat hunters spent 2 weeks in the glades, if they would kill more than 30 cats?

So, the government tells us that there are so many Burmese pythons that it is a problem, so therefore they are put a government list, making it very hard for people to own them.

The government tell us that there are so few Indigo snakes that it is a problem, so therefore they are put a government list, making it very hard for people to own them.

Then 1000 python hunters spend 2 weeks in the glades and manage to find 30 Burmese pythons.

I firmly believe that I could find 30 Indigos in 2 weeks, by myself.

The science behind these laws is junk!

Outstanding! They are a dream of mine, but way out of my price range right now. When we have settled all of our other problems, such as cars and a new home, I plan to put together 2.6 eastern indigos. Definitely one of my favorites. I’ve seen many in the wild. They are a pleasure to observe.

Beautiful. I'm not sure I want to breed yet. The permits are a pain. If the permits went away, I'd get a few more and start breeding.

Sell them in VA and no paperwork is needed. Only necessary if you cross stateliness. I know where you can sell at least a couple in the state, so long as you cut a poor man a good deal. Haha
