PostSubject: Ball Python Shedding Scare!!!!!!!   Mon Nov 12, 2012 4:40 am

Ok so I have had my Ball Python Destarien since he was a hatching he is now 4 years old and it came upon shedding time and as always I put him to soak for about 30 to 45 minutes and when he came out he shed right away but then I noticed he had a whole other shed under the first shed that he shed today has anyone ever heard or seen this happen before because it is definitely not normal for him I mean this is the first time ever seeing this happen with him??????

I've seen this in other snake species. Typically a retained shed is due to the humidity being too low. Do you have a rock or other rough item in the enclosure so the snake can start the shedding process? A moist hide may be helpful during the shedding cycle.

Always double check the environmental conditions of the enclosure.

Hopefully, someone with more ball python experience will chime in.

Two sheds at once? Do you have a pic? That's really weird.

I wish I had thought about taking pictures. The humidity is set perfect in his enclosure and he has quite a few rough objects in there as well and like I said he has never "retained shed" before! He shed immediately after coming out of soak and was still "milky looking" and within a few minutes he began to shed again, which I've never seen or heard of so it of course has me a little worried!!

If your humidity is spot on, then there is no real need to soak. He should be able to shed on his own with proper humidity.

He has always been a "patchy" shed kinda guy but the humidity is spot on because I do spray his enclosure 1-2 times daily so I don't see why he sheds so badly and he constantlysoaks himself in his water bowl

Perhaps your hygrometer is giving you incorrect readings.

My ball pythons had broken sheds a lot when I was depending on spraying the enclosures 1-2 times per day. I changed to keeping a moist shed box in their tank and misting the enclosure 3-4 times per day and put a humidity gauge in the tank to make sure it stayed the right humidity. They started shedding in beautiful full sheds after that. Smile As for having a double shed, it sounds like he may have had a retained shed from a previous shedding, which is most likely caused by humidity or other environmental issues. I would check with the vet if he does that again.
