PostSubject: Looking for ideas   Mon Sep 24, 2012 7:40 pm

When I went to Daytona, one of the coolest things I saw was a clutch of albino alligators hatching. I've got a clutch of BP eggs that are due to hatch on October 7th, which also is the Hampton Roads Expo (we have two tables). I was toying with the idea of bringing the clutch and allowing them to hatch during the show. Only issue is what is the best way to keep the humidity and temp constant on the trip, during the show and on the way home. Anyone have any ideas? I may not bring them, but it may be cool since it would be a crowd pleaser.

Oh, I have a 10 gallon glass tank to use and a spare thermostat. I'm thinking of a UTH heater, hooked into the thermostat. Filling the bottom of the tank with wet mulch, then placing the egg box on top of that. A top would hold in the humidity. So, I think I can take care of them at the show, but the transportation to and from are the keys.

You could get a converter to convert a car outlet into a regular outlet. Plug in a regular on/off (I've read prop are very sensitive to the electrical source) and you can maintain the proper heat level in the car.

You know, I think the Pilot has a 110 outlet! That may be the ticket. Put the tank in a cooler to keep the temperature constant with the thermostat and I think it may work. I need to order some heat tape for the bottom of the tank, but I think this might work.

Just ordered heat tape and cords. I think this just might work and would be cool to have eggs hatching during the show. It will be my last clutch of the season.

Guess it helps to think out loud (typing).

I would use the converter and cooler idea too. Don, what day were your eggs laid? I have a couple clutches hatching that weekend too! I want to say mine were laid on 8/10

8/12 was the date laid. Mine usually pip around 55 to 56. Which would be 10/6 or 10/7.

Since you are only traveling for a couple of hours you could just fill water bottles with warm water and place them in a cooler with the egg tub. The cooler will keep the water bottles plenty warm for you trip. You can refill them for the ride home.

That's cool Don! I would go with Brian's idea and the car converter. Could you moss on top of the dirt? I don't know if the humidity has to stay really high or not, but the heat might dry the dirt out throughout the day...???

Well bummer, this clutch was due to hatch on 10/7, but the little buggers didn't read the book. I went in to see if my last clutch has shed yet and found this in the last clutch of the year for us:
