PostSubject: Fighting RIs   Mon Sep 10, 2012 6:32 pm

I just 'rescued' a new red tail boa from some people (technically I BOUGHT him, even though I new he wasn't healthy because I didn't want to send him back with his terrible owners who obviously weren't ready for such a large responsibility).
Not only was he covered in mites, he also has a RI. I am fighting the mites off and treating him for those and it is helping, however I won't be able to get him to the vet until Saturday (I get paid Friday, spent the last of my money on him!). I made an appointment for then but, until then, what are the steps I need to take to slow it down?
He's in quarantine and I know how lethal RIs can be for snakes; I'm doing the best I can to help him and until Saturday morning unfortunately there's not much I can do. ): Poor fella....

Boosting the heat slightly can help stave off the worst of an RI (at least in BPs), but only temporarily. Hopefully someone else here will know if it works for Boas, but usually raising the heat to the high end of the snake's natural range can prevent the RI from worsening for a little while. Other than that, just make sure the humidity isn't too high and his substrate stays dry. Try using a smaller water bowl or a smaller amount of water in the bowl, to prevent the enclosure from getting too humid.

Try to keep traffic around him low and avoid handling him. Stressing him out will only make it worse.

The vet should be able to fix him up pretty easily Smile

I'm just sickened by the fact someone would let the animal get this bad, then just sell him for profit. They tried to say they didn't know about the mites and I haven't told them about the RI yet, but I do plan to send them a copy of the vet bill attached to a strongly worded email. I know that it probably won't make a difference, but at least it would make me feel better!

Maybe it would convince them to at least be more careful about flipping their poor animals. :c Good luck to you and your poor boy.

Also, keep in mind that if you are purchasing flipped animals, you are feeding the beast (the animal flippers).

Best of luck with your new boa.

I don't think it was a flipper so much as someone that bought him as a novelty, then got bored with him when he got big. They didn't make much money off of me if any; the enclosure he has is an expensive one.
