PostSubject: CB vs. WC vs. FARMED?   Wed Aug 15, 2012 6:40 pm

So alright, Captive Bred vs. Wild Collected is kind of a durp question so ignore that part.

But my confusion comes in when folks use the term "Farmed"... what is the difference between Farmed and Captive Bred? and someone told me their animals were Farmed (and I quote) "So technically they'd be considered Wild Collected"...

Why?

My guess was that farming is captive breeding on a huge "puppy mill" scale? But if that was the case why would they be technically referred to as W.C.? I'm SO CONFUSED! Facepalm

on a side note, my concern is that I personally wouldn't want a wild collected animal for a few reasons... A. it might take longer for the animal to adjust to a captive environment and may be far far less receptive to handling than a captive bred animal. B. I wouldn't want to have to be so overly worried about parasites and health issues that an animal may not ever be exposed to in a captive world. C. depending on the species, I wouldn't want an animal that was removed from it's native population, especially if this is a species that does breed readily in captivity.

Personally, I would consider any imports from Africa as WC, regardless of whether they are "farmed" or not.

However, farming is a little different than collecting from the bush. They are purposely bred for export thus not depleting the natural species. I have read that Ghana charges a head tax on each farmed bp that goes back towards wildlife development projects.

Of course, many could be calling themselves as farmed and still be field collecting.

They also collect eggs from the wild and hatch them. I think these would also be considered farmed babies.
