being that i am new to the aspect of morphs breeding and genes, are there some genes that are better to have when starting off? ive heard that spiders are a good start along with pastels.. but what other morphs are good for beginners?

Dominant and Co-Dominant morphs are great, because they are not super expensive, but can be used to produce expensive offspring. For example, alone a Super pastel male is about $500 and a Bumblebee or Spider female ranges from $200 (spider) to $450 (Bee). Together, these two relatively inexpensive morphs can create a Killerbee which can be worth much more.

Some co-doms are even useful when you're dealing with the 'current' in-demand morphs, like Mystics, Enchis, Womas (regular and Hidden gene). Morphs like Mojaves, Pastels, Spiders, etc. will always throw something new in. Same goes for things like Black Pastels. Alone they are about $150/$300 (males/females). Paired with Ghosts, which are roughly $200/$400 (males/females), they make Black Pastel Hypos, which are phenomenal snakes that are worth about $600/$800 (male/female). Keep in mind, these prices are rough estimates c;

Things like Mojaves, Spiders, Pastels, Lessers, Butters, etc. are great for beginners because they can be combined to produce more expensive morphs, which can be sold off to re-invest in different snakes to further a project. Plus, even if you catch up to the current market and are dealing in what is currently 'hot', these simple co-dom/dom morphs can throw something beautiful in and make a morph even more outstanding. It all depends on what you are looking for. I currently collect Dom/Co-Dom morphs in the hopes of eventually producing offspring that can bring me enough money to invest in popular recessive morphs.

I highly recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Designer-Morphs-One-Constrictor-Mutations-Variations/dp/3899734866/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1344826810&sr=1-1&keywords=designer+morphs

and this list: http://www.worldofballpythons.com/morphs/

if you don't already have both, to find out what you're looking for. Good luck! Very Happy

That should say that, since Hypo is recessive, you have to have a Black Pastel het Hypo to make Black Pastel Hypos :/ All the same, they are gorgeous snakes!

/fail.

Genetics are fun! I love Co-Dom and Dominant morphs. They can really be amazing. Plus no two snakes look exactly alike (save for twins, obviously), so you never know what the offspring will look like Smile
