PostSubject: A question on scientific names   Thu Aug 09, 2012 10:24 am

When I got into the hobby in the late 80s, "common" names for snakes were anything but, and the only way to ensure you were talking about the same animal was to use the scientific name.
Now that I am back into the hobby, I almost never see the scientific name used, instead I see tons of names that, to me, mean nothing. Like "pastel" or "snowflake" or "spider" and the like.

Aren't these all just python regus? The royal, or ball, python, or are there actual sub classifications for these?

They are morphs, just like dog breeds. All the same the species just with slight mutations.

Yeah, I'm new to the whole "morph" scene myself. but these names are all in regard to breeding certain phenotypes. Just like pitbull, Labrador, and Chihuahua all describe breeds of dogs, Pastel, bumblebee, spider, describe different selected phenotypes of Python regius.
