PostSubject: Snapping turtles eating flake food.    Tue Aug 07, 2012 3:01 pm

I have a big aquarium where I have my two juvie snappers in, plus some fish for them to nom on. However there is some goldfish they never ate and that have grown to large for then to eat so I just keep them in there and feed them. The snappers will eat the smaller goldfish, and even my snail Sad , but they really do the snappy happy dance when I throw some of the fish flake food in there. Is this norm? Also I noticed that one has black nails and the other has clear nails. Does this mean anything?

In the wild, the eastern snapping turtle consumes about 37% plant material. Goldfish alone won't meet their nutritional needs. Reptomin turtle sticks along with feeder fish is a good choice. I could not find a reference that mentioned different claw or nail color, but that is an interesting observation.

Yeah they do get their usual food between me buying goldfish, but I was curious if anyone else heard of snappers eating flake food like it's candy.

I'm stumped about the clear nails as well. Maybe I can get some pictures.

I had a WC pet snapper when I was a kid and he ate everything. I wish I remember why I did it, but the flake food doesn't taste bad at all Smile

Black nails for him on top, clear nails for her on bottom.

Thanks. Smile But do you see the nails? They're both WC, the black nailed one I've had for a year, the clear nailed one I've had for a few months. Both are super tame.

I do believe them to be a pair, not sure if I'm going to breed them. Would be interesting to see the babies and what color nails they have. Or if it's a mix.

The gender of snapping turtles is determined by the location of the vent. For males the vent is located past the rim of the top shell. Females have the vent located inside the rim of the top shell.

The smallest reproductive size for females is a plastron length of 155 mm ( ~6 inches).

A lot of my turtles have different color nails and I have a lot of turtles, in my wife's mind anyway.
