I guess the government in Florida is going to charge him a leg, since he already paid with an arm!

Bummer that they killed the alligator for this guy's stupidity. :/

He definitely gave that family a show. Facepalm

Maybe it was the alligator with a hand sticking out of its mouth and the middle finger was sticking up?!

That's what I was thinking. How did they know it was the exact gator? My guess is they just spent a day looking for the largest one they could find and killed it just so the public wouldn't do the whole Jaws panic.

I think you're right. It was just public pacification.

If he had been feeding the alligator for a long period of time and the animal was located in close proximity to humans I might be able to see why they decided to kill an animal for being an animal.

But it seems from this story that it was a chance encounter quite a distance from residences or even areas where humans normally tread. I think they used the logic that this animal will have a diminished fear of humans because he's been fed, but using that logic you'd have to kill every gator that this doofus may or may not have come into contact with. That simply doesn't seem feasable.

But then again, I wouldn't put it past some people.

I've done a fair amount of work with crocodilians and it has been my experience that it takes a bit of work (feeding) before one starts to associate a human with food. Any wild crocodilian that forms a human/food association is an accident waiting to happen.

I agree that any crocodilian that has learned to associate people with food is dangerous. But it's a double-edged sword. They had to learn it from somewhere.

If people would stop feeding alligators and crocodiles they wouldn't need to be worried about the things coming up into their yards or approaching them. In turn, those animals wouldn't need to be euthanized to prevent the public fear of a monster it created.

Yes, it is fascinating and awe-inspiring to watch a dinosaur eat. Does that mean you should dangle a fish over the side of a small boat? No. Just no.

My aunt lives on Lake Seminole in Florida and people throw their table scraps out into the lake. Those same people are then shocked when the alligators follow water-skiers across the surface of the water and come up on the banks to munch on purse-dogs.

Common sense is such a misnomer. It is not common at all.

236 years later you understand the joke that Thomas Paine was playing on America when he coined the phrase.
