PostSubject: Reptile Rescues popping up   Mon Jul 09, 2012 8:14 pm

It seems recently that there have been some "reptile rescues" popping up recently on CL. I don't know if it is the horribly short ads asking for free reptiles and supplies, the lack of a legitimate website, or what but these just seem fishy to me. What do you all think? And if I'm not mistaken, isn't it against the law to call yourself a rescue if you don't have non-profit status? Or is that only if you call yourself non-profit and you don't have non-profit status?

This kind of bugs me if these are not actual rescues because then people like me who actually want to START a rescue in the future, how will people know I'm a legitimate rescue with so many frauds out there? Not that I am starting a rescue any time soon. I need the space and money first, but this just really pisses me off a tad.

I think a website, and word of mouth will be much better then this guy begging on craigslist. When the time comes and you are ready you already know that the people on this website back you and thats alot of people

I just hope no one is dropping off animals with these people thinking "Oh good, someone will find my snake Fluffy a new home." and the person ends up hoarding the animals and not taking proper care of them.

Yeah same here. Its a shame what people will do to get free animals. Hopefully people will be smart enough to do a bit of research first before giving up an animal to someone who might not take care of it.

One of the oldest scams running. Stay away from CL rescues.

iagree That's one of the reason I stopped using CL. Anonymity will bring out the worst in some people. I email them and then add them to my black list.

I've been seeing these too. Seems sketchy as hell. I wouldn't trust these guys with a pet rock, much less a living, breathing animal.

I hate when people beg on Craigslist. It makes them look desperate and stupid. Not to mention that obnoxious tag that most of these have had, where they take pains to say "we're not going to pay you a ridiculous rehoming fee".

So you know a lot about reptiles, and you're in the market, but you don't want to pay? You're going to be rehoming these reptiles in the future, once you consider them 'rehabilitated'?

Seems perfectly legitimate. You definitely don't sound like a bunch of worthless animal flippers.

It is bad but at the same time it's just as bad seeing a lot of young reptiles show up on CL lately. With the "oh I bought this for my son and now he doesn't care so I want to get rid of these water dragons or this beardie because I let my 8 year old con me into it but I will only let it go if you buy the full set up with it." Everyone on craigslist is worthless.

iagree

On a serious note, I rarely use CL... and if I see something on there I google search any phone numbers that are listed or look at it and compare it to ads on here to see if they maybe... otherwise I full on question people interrogation style... But if I wasn't interested in our snakes and such anymore, I'd go to a close friend first to see if they would be interested before finding some random place online without researching it. Maybe we should all flag the rescues that aren't legit or seem scammish?

Several years ago I investigated one of these "rescues" that was popping up on the DC craigslist multiple times a day. You truly do not know what kind of people you can expect to find on the other end of those ads. I think some of these are scams but some of them are well-meaning people who are just clueless as to what these ads (on a free website) look like to the outside world.

For any of you who have been around for a while, you might remember the situation that unfolded with Michael Davis, MnJ Reptile Rescue, and unfortunately, the character once known as "Muffdaddy." There is a fairly long BOI thread about it which eventually died, but don't think for a second that it didn't have real-life ramifications for me that took place off the internet.

I don't regret exposing the people that were behind the scam because they were truly in the wrong, but I would think twice about digging into one of these again. So be careful!

I remember Muffdaddy. That guy was here in Virginia and someone I would never do any business with. That was around two years ago. Hopefully, he has gone away. He is a classic example of why you should not trust rescues on CL.

We have a lot of those popping up on our CL too. They are pretty much just saying we will take your unwanted reptiles and reptile supplies or saying they are in need of free stuff. It's very irritating and it does look bad for the people who want to have a legitimate rescue. I check CL all the time, but if I am buying or selling anything there are loads of wuestions to go with it, and I have reported people for running scams on multiple occasions (not just reptiles).
