PostSubject: Clowns   Fri Jul 06, 2012 12:32 am

So clowns have always been one of my favorite morphs. I have been trying to budget for one. However, every Clown I have seen listed for sale has been more than I am comfortable dropping all at one time on one snake.

I am currently saving up for another rack so that I can expand my collection.

My current snakes are all babies (Most are 2011), so all too young to breed. Since that is the case, I am thinking of adding a 1.1 pair of 2012 100% Het Clowns.

If and when I decide to do this, I'm asking you guys, as breeders/owners/buyers/sellers, what is a fair price for a 100% Het Clown pair? Do Clowns have any significant genetic ticks like Spiders and Caramels that I should absolutely ask about and/or make sure the pair isn't related? I haven't found much in the way of them having terrible deformities like duck bills or wobbles, but I know there are some breeders on here that deal a lot with Clowns, and I'm wondering if you all have seen anything severe? I know to ask about feeding and shedding, basic health, etc., but do any of the Clown breeders and enthusiasts out there know of anything else I should be wary of when it comes to this morph?

I have never experienced or heard of any problems with the clown gene. The only drawback I have run across is when you get one you want to cross it with everything else in your collection. Don't bother buying a pair unless you get a free male with the female. The female will take 2-3 years before she breeds. By that time the price of a pastel het clown will likely be around 200 bucks. No need to lay out the extra cash and have to feed and clean the het male.

That is an excellent point! Thank you.

I'm glad they don't have any common genetic problems. It seems like everywhere I look now there's some new horror story about the Desert, Super Champagne, or Pearl. I hadn't heard anything from Clowns by themselves, so I'm glad there's nothing 'wrong' with them. Killer Clowns are probably my favorite morph on the market right now, but that's way in the future for me. Smile

Clowns are the _______ and where it's at.... 75% of my collection is around the clown gene I did that based on two things as many know I LOVE THE CLOWN GENE!!! Secondly if it happens that I don't sell anything ( which I don't mind if nothing I produce ever sells although it always seems to sell...lol ) I'm left with something I don't mind working with so keeping them has no real downside... lls

I agree. Get a het female now and by the time she's ready, pastel het clown (or maybe even lesser het clowns) will be significantly reduced.

I disagree. Get two females this year (three if you can afford it), then get a male next year. Then you have a treo or better and better your odds.

As for fair price, I would wait another month. With all the hype clowns have gotten lately, I think hets will be abundant and reduced by fall.

Thanks all, this is excellent advice. I will probably look into two 2012 100% het clown girls instead. Hopefully by the time I have the space and spare cash, Focal will be right and they'll be much cheaper. I have seen a lot of cutting-edge clowns going up lately. In fact, there was a Leopard Clown (Maybe...?) in my Facebook feed from NERD the other day that was absolutely amazing.

I really appreciate it guys. When I started keeping BPs, I never thought I'd be able to have a Clown. The fact that it's now becoming a possibility is dumb founding and exciting. Smile Maybe one day I'll have my Clown and I'll be cutting eggs looking for a Killer Clown XD

This is spot on. Get 0.2 or 0.3 100% hets this year, just raise them up. Clowns are the best investment I've ever made, if I could go back in time I'd buy more of them.
