PostSubject: so i have another beginner question   Mon Jun 18, 2012 1:37 am

When I first got this snake a little over a week ago I noticed some grey on the head almost like dry skin "ashy" or whatever. When I asked the guy told me it was dry skin probably from the humidity too low so I've been keeping the humidity up the best I can but not seeing any improvement. Anybody know what this might be? Maybe stuck shed? Anything I can do?

If it is stuck shed, it may not come off until the snake sheds again. Don't pick at it. Like CP3 said, a picture would go a long way to give you some advice.

It could either be stuck shed or a scab/rub mark that is retaining shed. While this isn't the most approved method and the situation must be properly gauged by experience, I have used a small piece of scotch tape to remove loose pieces from newly acquired snakes. I would not use tape on retained skin from a scab because you may aggrivate the wound. Most of the time it's better to leave stuck alone unless it gets worse. It will take care of itself most of the time.

Using petroleum jelly or triple-antibiotic cream withOUT the added pain relief, will soften and moisten the dead skin and he/she may just rub on something to remove it.
