Copperhead on the left corn snake on the right.
I was able to tell them apart by looking at the heads and patterns.

Copperhead left, corn right.

Distinguishable by the head shape, patterning, and body shape.

I know the one on the left is a copperhead and I never learned much about corns, but that isn't a copperhead head on it.

copperhead left. cornsnake right. you can tell by shape/ coloration. pupils on a corn should be round (o) and on the copperhead they should be cat eyes (). also, the black and white vertical bars on the corns lower jaw help.

everyone here is correct. The copperhead is on the left and the corn snake is on the right. This unlikely couple was found at the Shenandoah River Stat Park Spring Survey the VHS organized this year. Interestingly, copperheads have been known to hibernate with rat snakes and even rattle snakes. This was a very neat find as both of these snakes were very cool looking specimens. All venomous snakes in virginia are pit vipers, so the loreal pit is what you can look at to see if this is a venomous snake. Additionally our 3 venomous snakes also have vertical pupils as opposed to the round ones that the non-venomous snakes have. Smile Awesome!
