Someone on CL found him and decided that the only reasonable course of action would be to take him indoors and make a pet out of him.

I'm not very good at telling the difference between species, so I wanted to ask all the smarties here.

it's a juvenile black rat snake. E. obsoleta. The eyes and color aren't right for a corn.

its either a corn or rat. maybe a yearling? but either way they make good pets, they are easy and dont get too big. nice snake though it has a cool design on head

Yeah, as it grows it should turn almost totally black, and the belly pattern will diffuse somewhat. I've seen hatchling obsoletus that I could have sworn were corns...

That is not a juvie black ratsnake. There is way too much red for that to even be considered a black rat.
It looks like a corn snake or possibly a Elaphe emoryi.

The spear shape on top of the head and general coloration and pattern are consistent with that of a corn snake.

Someone found a Blizzard Corn Snake in their yard in VA, just food for thought. could be an Emori or even a Hybrid?
