PostSubject: Girl Scouts Rock the Beach   Wed May 02, 2012 9:16 pm

I have just made arrangements to bring a few snakes to the Virginia Beach Convention Center for the Girl Scout's 100 year anniversary celebration.

I haven't received all of the information, but I know that I am going to be bringing a few of my ball pythons and letting the girls get up close and personal.

Education wise, I know I want to go over the importance of husbandry and stress respect for the animals.

Very cool, are you going to discuss the importance of conservation of herps at all?

Conservation is something I haven't had much experience with. If you were going to teach conservation what would you go over?
I intend for the focus of my presentation to be on the respect that these (and all) animals deserve.

Sounds super awesome! One step in the right direction. I have found if I approach my daughters friends while they are at the age they are now (6-10) they are more open to them as opposed to the older tweens/teens/adults that are set in their ways.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

The event went very well never had less then 20 kids at the table at any given time. We had one minor incident with one of the corn snake babies bit a girl so the rest of the day they took a much needed break. Overall reached alot of kids and parents and had alot of positive feedback along with offers to do more shows. Will post more pics as i get them. I had my photographer out there so once she is done editing the pics and sends them to me i will post them.

Great job. I've never done any reptile education shows but a thought on the baby corn snake. Perhaps it might be a good idea to use juvie corn snakes as simply a display animal and not one to be touched or handled, then use an adult that you are more comfortable with as the handled animal. I know that my experience with corn snakes babies is that they think they are deadly, venemous serpents and they bite whenever they get the chance. lol.

Yeah it was a lesson learned. Really hoping I will be able to do more shows like this it was a lot of fun even if it was a 10 hour day.

This picture is one that will never leave me from this event. It may seem that this child is scared but she was so severely disabled she only had minor muscle control in one had to control her wheelchair. Her parents asked if she could hold the snake and get a picture whit her. She seemed to be real interested and kept following the snake with her eyes the moment she came over. I really hope we made a difference in this childs life and that it was positive for her.
