That is a pretty turtle. Hey Larry! Do you ever get the urge to skip one of those turtles like a stone? They are so flat!

In the old days we use to fling them in the air and shoot them like skeet. However, since that Larry guy became president, that activity is now "frowned upon".

Alright...Correct this is in fact a Wood Turtle. This is a tier 1 state threatened reptile and is in imminent danger of becoming extinct in the state of Virginia.

So what can we do? Is it illegal to raid nests in order to incubate the eggs? Wouldn't it be beneficial to raid the nests, incubate the eggs and ensure that they are old enough to fend for themselves?

I would also really like to help with conservation. I'm planning on helping with one of the surveys this summer, is there anything else I can do? Turtles becoming extinct is very troubling!

It is illegal to harm, collect or possess this species. The problem is that it doesn't really matter if we incubate them in captivity if there is no habitat for them to be realesed to. Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries on Wood Turtles

If you have any questions concerning wood turtles, please contact John Kleopfer of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (804-829-6703; John.Kleopfer@dgif.virginia.gov).

I didn't even think of that. I guess if there is no where for them to go then there is no point in making more.

This is another reason for wood turtle population decline:

Yes I remember this also. Poachers, a big problem in Virginia as well, and not just turtles.

What have poachers been poaching? You think you would hear more about that. A lot of people spend their times in the outdoors and it would be beneficial for everyone if they kept their eyes open for "suspicious activity".
