Does anyone keep and or use snake hooks for handling their ball pythons, specifically aggressive ones?

I was under the impression that a particularly nasty one could slowly be tamed over time with gentle handling and that a snake hook is overkill for such a relatively small, non-venomous snake. Am I mistaken in this assumption?

I have a snake hook, but it is not for any of my BP's. It is for when my neighbors come over and say they have found a copperhead or other snake and I need to move it. Unfortunately, my neighbors usually kill it before telling me about it. So, the snake hook is more of a decoration. I can't imagine using it on a BP, even the aggressive ones.

Snakes are defensive, not aggressive.
In my experience, people have different tolerances to pain, but more importantly, many people have a strong psychological aversion to being bitten by any snake of any size. If a hook makes the handler more comfortable and it can be used properly, then one should be used.
Often defensive snakes will settle down once they are removed from their enclosure. In these cases using a hook, towel, t-shirt or other method can make the removal process less stressful for animal and keeper. Most snakes can be conditioned to tolerate some human interaction, few however will remain intolerant.

I keep a hook and use it when holding back a snake when I have to remove a live rodent. My cages are 36" deep and over 6' high so they come in handy when I have to reach for them.

I believe they strike mostly on instict so I also use it to let them know I am there and/or lifting a hide to check on them.

I don't mind getting bit..... I'm definitely not worried about a ball python but I was online looking for handling gloves and a snake hook cause my wife said she would start to handle them if I got her those items. Although I don't think a snake hook and gloves can be considered "handling" them, lol.

Ryan, my voting is restricted for the rest of today so I'll get you tomorrow.

It's an interesting variety of responses but it seems so far no one uses them to regularly handle bps. This is what I assumed but read a thread on another site where some people stated doing so. I thought it was overkill (barring for a scared a wife Wink ) but thought I'd throw it out here to see the group's thoughts.

I have one but I only use to point the business end of my snakes (the aggressive ones) away from my hand so I can pick them up. Sometimes you just have to look funny at my male Desert and he will take a shot at you. He has calmed down a lot though.

None of the options work for me, lol. The poll is too one sided! I don't use snake hooks with my bp's. I use a "pillowcase" method. Aka if a snake is being aggressive, I drop a pillowcase on its head before picking it up. This usually tells the snake that I'm handling it, and that my hand is not food.

Yeah, I just take the bite, lol. I've noticed, with my BPs anyway, that when I'm sure with my movements and I don't hesitate I don't get bit. Involvement of food is obviously the exception and my cinnamon females just bite me for the hell of it..... I don't know why, at least they have an amazing appetite Very Happy

Lol, I'm never unsure of my movements but I have been bitten once when reaching in to get a water bowl. Usually it's a case of either surprising the snake, or not having fed the snake recently enough. I don't mind though.

Justin Kobylka has a video on taming aggressive snakes on youtube. It's a simple method but has broken all my little pissy ones.

I have 1 ball python and never ever ever needed a hook. Docile as they come. Sometimes I hook my adult leucistic rat snake, until he settles down. He is pretty defensive and wary of hands in his tank. Now my tree vipers, cobras, vipers, and rattlers, .... whole different story. Wink

I used to have a leucistic rat snake. I loved him so much. He kept getting eye problems though and I eventually had to rehome him with a vet tech because the vet bill every time was $150 bucks! Ugh!

Going to have to check out your snakes, Lefoflarry. Smile

IMO it can never hurt to have a hook around. They all have bad days as well

I am going to have to just apologize for my immature behavior but I lack the self control and will power to pass up these types of opportunities.

This apology will be good through the rest of the year. I will renew them on a yearly basis.
